Surgery Rep - UK

Alice Campion
Trauma & Orthopaedics
Wales
I am an Orthopaedic themed Core Surgical Trainee in Wales. I am the Welsh Rep and one of the two Surgical Reps. I’ve done an MSc in Global Health and the DTM&H in East Africa - courses which have led to some great opportunities to work in various capacities in Ethiopia, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda. Most recently, I’ve been working with a team made up of UK and Uganda-based Surgeons, Geographers, Intensivists and Forum Theatre Experts on projects to improve care for patients suffering from major limb loss in post-conflict Northern Uganda.
I feel I have so much more to learn about surgical service provision world-wide, and the complexities of the problems highlighted by the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery. I believe GASOC is paving a way for trainees to contribute effectively to solutions as we progress through our careers.

Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery
Manchester
I am a plastics registrar trainee living in Manchester. I first became aware of GASOC as a medical student volunteering at the 2016 Global Surgery Frontiers conference, and I joined the committee as part of the communications team in September 2020. I was delighted to be elected to remain on the committee in January 2022 as the UK Surgical Rep. I have experience of the public health systems in Ethiopia and Uganda, and have worked with the non-governmental organisation, Kitrinos Healthcare, in the largest refugee camp in Europe. I’m interested in improving links between trainees across the globe, and getting more people excited about global surgery, anaesthesia and obstetrics!
