Dr Prem Yohannan
Senior specialist surgeon, Mozambique
Prem Yohannan studied at the Armed Forces Medical College, University of Pune, India, from where he graduated as a medical doctor in 1996. After a couple of years working as a general practitioner, he did his Masters degree in Orthopaedic Surgery at the King George’s Medical College, Lucknow. At the turn of the millennium, he volunteered to work in Mozambique. He currently works for the Ministry of Health, Government of Mozambique as a Senior Specialist Surgeon and also teaches at the Eduardo Mondlane School of Medicine, Maputo. He is currently Director of Post-Graduate Education in Orthopaedic Surgery and Trauma. His interests are in Joint Replacements, Trauma Surgery, Surgical Education and Global Surgery. In 2018, he received the International Surgical Education Scholar Award from the American College of Surgeons of which he is an International Fellow. He is a fellow of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and southern Africa (COSECSA) and is an Accredited Trainer and examiner for the College. He is the first editorial board member of The Annals of African Surgery from the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
