Anna is a surgical rep and currently working in general surgery in the West of Scotland. Throughout her medical studies she was passionate about global health and spent a year as president of student-lead organisation Medsin, now Students for Global Health, at University of Glasgow. By the end of her foundation training her preferred specialty was general surgery and she knew she wanted to pursue this as her long-term career and spend time working in sub-Saharan Africa, inspired in part by the recently formed Lancet Commission on Global Surgery and work. After FY2 she completed the postgraduate diploma in Tropical Medicine and International Health in Antwerp, Belgium, before going to Cameroon for a year to work with the organisation Mercy Ships. This NGO provides surgical care to some of the world's poorest populations, particularly in West Africa, and seeing "global surgery" in action was an incredibly inspiring and formative experience. Anna believes that advocacy, education and research are the most useful tools to bridging global health inequalities and is proud to be part of an organisation that represents this.
